The fun of travelling

Posted by Vicky Ireland on April 1, 2012 at 15:27 0 Comments

Being over 50 and, even better, being retired from a full time career is really wonderful. When I was younger I used to think that 50 was so very old and really over the hill. You probably thought the same and so felt it necessary to prove that at a younger age we are capable of anything. What I have learnt is that even being 60 is fairly young and we can still do so many things. I won’t deny that there are some things that I cannot do as easily anymore such as gardening for more than an…

From PDA to CDA

Posted by Vicky Ireland on February 5, 2012 at 19:37 0 Comments

While attending a networking meeting on Friday Jan 20th mention was made of a planned bursary for a entreprenurial young woman from the previously disadvantaged community and it spurned this idea for a blog.

http://vicky.bundublog.com/2012/01/17/big-or-right/

As South Africans we are often so afraid to stand up for ourselves especially when the opponent is a big business or institiution. Best to leave it we say. We can never win. The cost is so great and I don't have the time. Are these really the reasons…

New Year Resolutions

New Year Resolutions. Have you made yours? I have to admit that I had not consciously made any until yesterday. We all think we have problems which are almost insurmountable until we chat with others.

I have just spent the last two days with…

A step into the unkown

As my membership of Refirement Network is only months old and my book and blog site have been out for just on a year I thought that I might repeat some of my early blogs on RN to tell you more about my book and why I wrote it. This was the first.

What is a Gift?

Posted by Vicky Ireland on December 19, 2011 at 20:57 0 Comments

http://vicky.bundublog.com/2011/12/19/what-is-a-gift/

As we approach Christmas Day for many of us our thoughts revolve around gifts – to whom to give gifts, what should we give each person, how much shall we spend etc, etc. This made me decide to use the word GIFT for my blog this week. It is…

Signs and sayings

 http://vicky.bundublog.com/2011/12/10/signs-and-sayings/

I decided to be trivial this week.

Some of the signs I see or sayings we use really fascinate me. This came as an idea for a blog when once again I walked past one of these small shops usually ‘manned’ by a single…

Your life's metaphor

I am reading this little 60 page booklet called “What on Earth am I Here for?” by Rick Warren. Believe it or not it is taking ages to read because it has great depth and one has to really…

We are so privileged to live in a truly beautiful part of the world. Last week my husband and I were part of a tour group who spent a few days in the Eastern Free State. It was organised by the owners of the Fouriesburg Country Inn, Marta and Clive Craig. They are 2 wonderful people as are their 2 sons who also act as tour guides and help to run the hotel. They have as their motto “Service…

Finding work as an over 50 year old in SA

Posted by Lynda Smith on November 14, 2011 at 6:53 8 Comments

The main conversation I had every day at The Retirement Expo was around finding work and continuing to earn a living to sustain oneself. There are a number of challenges for our age group around this dilema and I would love to start a conversation with as many of you as possible to try and find solutions.

Here are my main thoughts.

1. The world of work has changed so we do need to adjust our thinking about finding work.

2. Social media is big part of how…

Through the insight of Lynda in establishing Refirement Network I hope to meet like-minded framers and clients whether they are photographers, artists or the casual person who would like to have a picture framed.

Using social media to extend my business is a new challenge to me and will appreciate comments and feed back to help…

Where has the big R gone?

Posted by Vicky Ireland on November 12, 2011 at 18:06 0 Comments

Last week, as I was doing some shopping, a now common action happened; two young men pushed their way past me on to the escalator without so much as a ‘sorry’ or backward glance. It got me thinking – where has that significant action we children of previous generations had drummed into us gone. Yes, that little thing with big consequences called RESPECT.

Of course, I am showing my age right now, but we were regularly reminded to show respect to those older than ourselves, to those who…

Why are mothers missed more

Posted by Vicky Ireland on November 11, 2011 at 13:52 1 Comment

Why is it that when your mother dies it is so much more of a wrench, for daughters, than when your father does. Do not think that I am in any way suggesting that the loss of one’s father is not painful but my mother died just 2 years ago and I miss her more the longer it is since her death. My father died 29 years ago and I found it much easier to accept it and move on, as the saying goes. I do miss him and was awfully sad to say good bye to him but, although I had the odd…

Iemand het die volgende per e-pos aan my gestuur.  Ek weet ongelukkig nie wie die oorspronklike outeur is nie, maar dit is nietemin lesenswaardig.

Expo and Lynda's feedback

Posted by Beverley Pender on October 31, 2011 at 9:48 3 Comments

Just read Lynda's three-point feedback summary -- thanks, Lynda! -- and I'm not in the least surprised about what appears to be a lack of deep understanding of the needs and wants of Baby Boomers. A lack of understanding of who we are, what we can offer ... the list goes on. Lynda, are you?

My biggest concern is about the overriding need for (and to) work. Without going into a detail here - it's a huge issue, as we know - I believe it is, arguably, of course, as pressing a concern as…
